Adult Training

If you are new to the world of sailing or just want to improve your skills, we encourage everyone to sign up for the Adult Training sessions. It's a great environment to learn to sail and meet other members of the club. The training you receive will make you feel much more at ease on the water and add to the fun you can have as a skipper or crew member, whether you sail on a keelboat or a small one-design sailboat.

Sailing opens up a lifetime of enjoyment and is a skill you will be proud to master. Sailing is both a science and an art. Once you learn to sail, you will have learned something many others only wish they could do. We welcome you to the wonderful world of sailing!

Curriculum:

The goal of the program provide students with the skill and confidence to daysail on their own. Instruction is skills-based: Adult Training Skills List. We will track each student's progress as they complete each skill on the list. The planned courses are 2 classroom and 4 on-water sessions. Completion of on-water training is based on demonstrated skills that generally takes 4 sessions to complete. Some students complete it in less and some require a few more, but sessions will be provided until all skills have been learned. After basic training has been completed we provide the opportunity to practice in a coached environment with our Jib and Main (JAM) fleet.

Classroom Training (Class 1 and Class 2):

5 classroom sessions consisting of Class 1 and Class 2 are offered every month starting in April and ending in August. There are two classes in each session. Class 1 on the 1st and Class 2 on the 3rd Thursday of the month with some adjustment for holidays. While attending in-person is recommended, all sessions will be available on Zoom. Course materials will be available electronically to each student prior to their session.

On-water Training (Weekday Evenings and Sunday Afternoons):

Once a student has completed a classroom session (both classes) they are eligible to signup for on-water sessions. (In special cases the classroom requirement may be waived by the Adult Education Chair.) Students are allowed to schedule 4 sailing training sessions for acquiring their on-water sailing proficiency skills. Additional on-water training sessions may be scheduled with the approval of the instructor. Classes are available May through September 4 days a week Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in the evening and Sunday afternoon with adjustments for holidays and ISC-hosted fleet regattas. Students will be able to select the type of boat (Interlake, Sunfish, Flying Scott, Highlander, J24) they prefer for training including their own sailboat if desired.

JAM Fleet (Wednesday and Sunday Races):

After on-water training has been completed, students will be able to participate in our Jib and Main (JAM) fleet. The JAM fleet will participate in the ISC normal racing schedule (Wednesday, Sunday and regattas). The JAM fleet will use Interlake sailboats with a crew of two (spinnakers will not be used). Participants will be required to switch skipper and crew after each race so everyone can practice their skills. While taking place in a racing setting, the goal isn't to win races. The objective is to practice sailing the boat effectively around the course and other boats. Students can sign up individually or in pairs. Participating with your own Interlake is encouraged. A coach boat will follow the fleet in a powerboat providing pointers and instruction as needed to maximize the benefit to the students.
